Paper project proposal

  • 1-Broadly describe your project idea for Invitation: From Flat to Full. In this description articulate how you envision your project will elicit a "full" experience.
In today’s image-obsessed culture, many of us are affected by the stereotypes portrayed in media that constantly reinforce thin people as ideal and sexy. We are all getting worried about putting on weight or wish we looked different or could fix something about ourselves. And that’s the start of anorexia nervosa, an eating disorder when your preoccupation with being thin has taken over your eating habits, thoughts, and life. My idea for the Invitation: From Flat to Full is to draw connection to anorexia, and hopefully make an increasing awareness of eating disorders in the public eye. Growing up, I have been constantly called to be underweight, skinny, bony, and I have suffered anorexia several times and I hated it. It further upsets me when I see the thinness culture in today’s society which could potentially lead to eating disorders for many people. My oral structure of this piece is a combination of a leaning coat Hanger and a partial mannequin as the foundation frame, with a long sweater knit.

  • 2- In your idea, how do you imagine utilizing your steel components? For example, will they be smaller steel parts that assemble into a larger form? Are they individual pieces that get distributed in a social based context? Are they "assists" that help other materials seemingly defy gravity? Something else?

clothe (textile)=> (Knitting, dressed on at last)
clothes hanger (wood, buy from store)
scapula (steel)=> (detachable part to the sternum[wood stick])
ribs (steel)=> (detachable part to the sternum[wood stick])
sternum (wood)=>(standing wood stick)

  • 3-As of now, what do you think you will use the most of: ¼ inch steel rod, ½ inch steel rod, lathed connections, and/or plate steel?
Some lathed connections and a lot of plate steel, little ¼ inch steel rod.
  • 4-What research have you done to support your idea? If your idea is based on a cultural event, have you researched its history? If your project references a symbol or object, have you researched background data on it? When you upload your project proposal, please include supportive images and/or information that shows you are looking at your ideas in an external way (not based on your subjective opinion)
I research the history of anorexia nervosa, what are the symptoms and cause for it. What I have researched is that in the early 1980s, we did not understand eating disorders. We did not have effective treatments for anorexia and other eating disorders. And people were dying from illnesses that were extremely difficult to treat. It’s important to know that anorexia is one of the deadliest mental illness. And there is the stigma of what it means to have an eating disorder.

  • 5- What other materials will you be incorporating into your project and why?
Wood, Textile. Wood is for making the foundation frame and hold the steel parts, and the textile is for the finally demonstration of “FULL” experiment as it illustrates how clothes looks like when it’s dressed to a skinny and lonely figure.
